"Grade level" math is really a rough label for a skill progression — most kids move through the same handful of stages, just at different ages and paces. If you're picking practice for your child, matching the skill matters more than matching the grade number on the box, and a two-year spread in either direction is completely normal for any given stage.

Here's the progression in more detail, roughly by age:

CountingAges 4-6

Recognizing numbers, counting sequences, and comparing quantities — the foundation everything else builds on. This stage also quietly includes number sense: knowing that 7 is more than 5 without counting both out, which matters more later than it seems to at the time. Kids who rush past this stage often resurface with shaky addition later, because addition is really just counting with extra steps.

Addition & subtractionAges 6-8

Single- and double-digit addition and subtraction, usually introduced together so kids see them as inverse operations. This is where "carrying" and "borrowing" show up — mechanically simple once understood, but genuinely confusing the first several times, since it requires holding two ideas (the digit and the group it came from) in mind at once.

MultiplicationAges 7-9

Times tables typically start with 2, 5, and 10 (easiest to pattern-match), then move to the harder 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9. This stage rewards patience more than any other — the early tables can create false confidence, since the "hard middle" (6, 7, 8, 9) genuinely takes more repetition and doesn't yield to the same shortcuts.

DivisionAges 8-10

Introduced once multiplication is solid — division practice mirrors the same 2/5/10 → 3/4 → 6/7/8/9 progression. Division is also where kids most often backslide on multiplication facts they thought they'd already learned, since division constantly asks "what times this number gives me that" — a harder retrieval than the forward direction.

Fractions and decimalsAges 9-11

Often the first real conceptual jump after arithmetic — a fraction isn't a new operation, it's a new kind of number, and that distinction trips up kids who've been fine with whole numbers so far. Concrete practice (splitting a pizza, a group of objects) tends to matter more here than it did at earlier stages.

Mixed reviewAges 9-12

Combining all four operations in the same set, which is closer to how math actually shows up in word problems and real life. This stage is less about learning anything new and more about building the flexibility to recognize which tool a problem needs without being told.

Pre-algebraAges 10-12

Working with an unknown value — solving for a missing number in an equation rather than just computing a result. This stage is a genuine bridge to algebra, and it goes far more smoothly for kids who are solid on the mixed-review stage first, since pre-algebra assumes quick, confident recall of all four operations rather than teaching them again.

A good rule of thumb across every stage: if a child gets most of a practice set right on the first try without hesitation, they're ready to move up. If they're guessing or need the question re-read, staying at the same level for another set or two usually helps more than pushing ahead — moving up before a stage is solid tends to just relocate the same gap to a harder level, where it's more expensive to fix.

It's also worth resisting the urge to name a stage by its grade rather than its skill. A child working on multiplication in what happens to be third grade isn't "doing third-grade math" in any meaningful sense — they're doing multiplication, the same stage a confident second grader or a catching-up fourth grader might be doing at the same time. Picking practice by the skill, not the number on the label, is what actually keeps it matched to the child in front of you.
