Diagnosing Math Gaps: What to Practice When "Just Behind" Isn't a Real Diagnosis

"My child is struggling with math" is a feeling, not a diagnosis. It's true, and it's also not specific enough to fix anything — struggling with a multi-step word problem could mean shaky arithmetic, weak reading comprehension, or fine skills in both that just haven't been combined before. Treating all three the same way wastes practice time on the wrong thing.
Before picking more practice, it helps to find out which skill is actually missing.
Wrong answers carry more information than a score does — Read the mistake, not just the mark
A child who gets 6 out of 10 wrong by making the same kind of error six times has a specific, fixable gap. A child who gets 6 wrong in six different ways has a much murkier problem — probably not a single skill gap but a shakier overall foundation. The pattern across wrong answers matters more than the count.
Separate the operation from the setup — Word problems especially
When a word problem goes wrong, check whether the child can do the bare calculation if you just hand them the numbers and tell them the operation. If yes, the gap is in reading and setting up the problem, not in the math itself — and no amount of extra times-tables practice will close that gap.
Test one level down before assuming the current level is the problem — Rule out a lower gap first
A child who's shaky at double-digit subtraction is sometimes actually shaky at single-digit borrowing, which the double-digit version just exposes more often. Dropping down a level to confirm the foundation is solid takes five minutes and saves weeks of practicing at a level that was never the real issue.
Slow and correct is a different problem than fast and wrong — Speed and accuracy aren't the same gap
A child who eventually gets the right answer but takes a long time likely has the concept but not the fluency — more repetition at the same level helps. A child who answers quickly but incorrectly likely has a conceptual misunderstanding, and more repetition just practices the wrong method faster.
One bad set isn't a gap — Check for a pattern across sessions
Everyone has an off day — tired, distracted, rushing to finish before dinner. Before concluding there's a real gap, it's worth seeing whether the same kind of mistake shows up again in a second, unrelated session. A one-time dip is noise; the same error two sessions apart is signal.
Confidence isn't a reliable signal either way — A kid can be sure and wrong, or unsure and right
A child who answers instantly and confidently isn't necessarily right, and one who hesitates and second-guesses isn't necessarily wrong — confidence tracks how a method felt to use, not whether it was correct. Using confidence as a stand-in for accuracy tends to miss exactly the gaps where a wrong method has become fast and automatic through repetition.
The practical version of all this: before adding more practice, spend five minutes actually watching how a wrong answer happened rather than just noting that it was wrong. Most "my child is behind in math" situations turn out to be one specific, narrow skill hiding behind a much broader-sounding complaint — and the narrow version is a lot easier to fix.
It also changes what a reasonable next step looks like. "More math practice" is close to useless as a plan, since it doesn't say what to practice or at what level. "More practice at single-digit borrowing, specifically" is a plan that can actually succeed or fail in a way you'd notice — and noticing it is what tells you whether the diagnosis was right in the first place.
